Between 1999 and 2001, Charles Fréger photographed about sixty groups of majorettes in a defined geographical area, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. His systematic approach does not aim to create a series of icons, in search of a definitive image, emblematic of what a majorette would be. On the contrary, it is a question of considering its subject as a whole where each image, each framing, each chosen background, each model, each place represented contributes their part to the whole project. This is what explains its breadth, diversity, and also its subtlety. Each photograph, playing with transparency and restraint, adds a touch to the final picture. The colour chart of signs and attitudes paints a successful and enlightening picture of majorettes today.
