Baker’s scarce collection of portrait, documentary, and nude photographs of the male youth, a highly personal and selective view of youth culture. The arrogance of Mr Cool in the Kensington Pool Hall, the defiant aggression of skinheads, or the provocative nakedness of the youth lying on his bed, all are depicted in Baker’s cult book.
This very subtle collection of pictures of teenage boys covers a wide range of settings - telephone kiosks, archery practice, asleep in the street, at pinball machines, sport, the beach, the bed, skinheads, candids, everything except school or being with parents. So what you get is a sense of the transience and the poetry, a particular sense of the place, and a variety of setups so that going from one image to the next is like a complete change in the weather. The boys themselves also seem to be from a range of backgrounds and suggest completely different personality types.
