This brilliant photographic essay of a youthful Polish woman living in the USA and training to be an astronaut. As of all Phillips‘s photography work, it is fun and alive. She has a unique talent of portraying someone on a variety of levels. The settings and situations impart a degree of generic normality as Monika poses in her swimsuit or with ice cream, yet Philips conveys a refreshing intimacy with her subject as Monika’s candid presence feels simultaneously innocent and worldly, wholesome and lusty. Favourite for sure.
