In 1984, David Williams was invited to spend six months as a photographer in residence at St. Margaret's School for Girls in Edinburgh, which was, at the time, Scotland's most elite boarding school for girls. Sponsored in part by the Scottish Arts Council, and later exhibited at Stills, the Scottish Photography Group gallery in Edinburgh. Pictures from No Man's Land is a cult classic story of adolescence and youth in a British all-female institution.
