In 2006, Danish photographer Jacob Aue Sobol moved to Tokyo for love. Finding himself isolated by the language barrier and the overwhelming scale of the city, he turned to his camera to find a sense of belonging. The result is a diary of high-contrast, grain-heavy images that capture the space between isolation and intimacy.
Sobol’s Tokyo is not the one found in Japanese travel bloggers' diaries. It's his Tokyo, a city of cramped apartments, hidden alleys, and raw human connection. His eye focused on the textures of skin, the smoke of a cigarette, and the vulnerable gazes of the people he encountered: an incredible book and winner of the prestigious Leica European Publishers Award.
