In 1970, a young Danish traveller named Jacob Holdt arrived in the U.S. with $40 in his pocket. He intended to stay for a few weeks; he stayed for five years, hitchhiking over 100,000 miles and staying in more than 400 homes and releasing the 1977 book American Pictures. This book, published in 2007, is the first book to look solely at the photography work of Holdt, without the extensive diary featured in American Pictures. It is arguably the most raw, uncomfortable, and devastatingly honest portrait of the "American Dream" ever captured.
