The iconic collection of Ryan McGinley's early photography was published to accompany an exhibition of Ryan McGinley's works from 1998 to 2003. This sizeable edition contains more than 1,500 photographs and polaroids from his wild downtown New York years. By photographing his group of friends, he managed to capture a powerful portrait of a generation- raw, poignant, sexy, disturbing, flicking between moments of pleasure, violence and calm, and ultimately defining the New York art scene of that period. The exhibition was put together by curator Nora Burnett Abram, whose essay offers a comprehensive look at Ryan's work, plus transcriptions of conversations between McGinley and artist Dan Colen, in which they talk about their history and shared friendship with the late Dash Snow, to whom the book is dedicated.
