Set in St Petersburg, Wolfgang Müller’s “Karat” is named after the brand of shoe polish, containing solvents, that many of the kids in this book inhale. The photographs in the book tell the stories of children and youths who live above the city’s streets, in the roofs and attics of disused buildings. Many have escaped from apathetic parents or decaying orphanages. Here, collectively they can sleep, get high and make their own money without being attacked or apprehended. The conditions are rough and the age range shocking, but the desolation of their situation is tempered by the warmth of the small family units they have formed with each other. Survival is key here through toughness, togetherness and camaraderie.
