Steps is a rare and early title from Fréger's celebrated Portraits "photographiques et uniformes" project, where he photographs individuals (usually youth) bound together by the same dress code. In this case, sixty Finnish synchronised figure skaters in full competition kit. It is an exploration of 'costume', the one they all share that gives them a collective identity, and individuality, with deadpan portraits of each of their faces, with the same pose, which he calls 'Winner Face'.
