A striking, deeply tactile monograph uncovering Penn’s radical, formerly suppressed series of studio nudes executed between 1949 and 1950. Moving away from the sharp elegance of his commercial Vogue assignments, Penn spent months exploring the fleshy, sculptural topography of the female torso.
The resulting images are heavily overexposed, bleached, and re-developed thus transforming soft human forms into high-contrast, modern stone abstractions reminiscent of Henry Moore sculptures.
