In June 1977, CBS aired a documentary on British punks. Up until then, only a few who had visited the UK had a sense of the British punk momentum. There was a change in the air- "The Pistols "Anarchy in the UK" was being heard across warehouses South and North Beach in San Fransisco and beyond into LA. The documentary made Punk a real movement, making the formula public knowledge: spike hairdos, torn clothes and studded leather jackets.
This books contains an extensive history of the establishment of 'cal-punk' built on the ashes of the flower children and beat generation. The California scene began around 1977 in dank basements and discarded locations and were transformed into living theatre by young bleach-blonde corporate flunky's with a desire to antagonise authority. An essential visual history of what it was like to be present in the two West Coast underground music scenes, with band images, flyers, posters and more.
