J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere’s photographs cross boundaries between traditional and contemporary Nigerian culture and expand our idea of art and its role in everyday life. Taken between 1968 and 1975, the photographs in this book illuminate a dynamic culture while exploring issues of aesthetic beauty and abstraction. The styles symbolised different life events, social statuses and geographical area and were often passed down through generations. They were usually nicknamed for the shapes they imitated, such as pineapples, crabs or bridges, and reflect the uniqueness and diversity of Nigerian culture.
