Founded in Paris in 1994 by Ezra Petronio and Suzanne Koller, Self Service was born out of a desire to dismantle the corporate, sanitised conventions of traditional fashion publishing. The tone of this landmark issue is established instantly by its iconic cover: a young Devon Aoki, captured through the surreal, hyper-realist lens of Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, draped in the conceptual, architectural geometry of Hussein Chalayan. It features seminal visual contributions from the era's most uncompromising visionaries, including Mark Borthwick’s ethereal, overexposed minimalism, HIROMIX’s raw, subjective youth gaze, and striking early photography from Steven Klein and Anders Edström. A golden age of editorial freedom, capturing the moment when print media felt less like an industry and more like an artistic rebellion.
