Dawoud Bey spent his childhood in Harlem and started photographing the streets of his childhood neighbourhood in 1975.  Even though he was coming in from Queens, where he lived as an adult, a big part of his family was still in Harlem, so he'd go back weekly and walk around familiarising himself with the streets he knew as a kid. The pictures in this book recall entire lives and histories, people and communities and experiences from an area that is in constant change. The images have a timeless quality that captures the essence of community, past and present.
