Ewen Spencer's culture-defining UKG documented the early days of the UK Garage phenomenon. In the summer of 1998, Spencer was documenting UK nightlife with then increasingly established competitor of the Face and dance music almanack 'Sleazenation' magazine. The term ‘Garage’ emerged from New York’s Paradise Garage nightclub in the mid-1970s, and UK garage shared with this an emphasis on dancing. Spencer’s photographs capture the essence of a scene as well as details of individuals out at Garage nights, a departure from the ‘straight-up’ style typical to 'i-D' and other style magazines at the time. This classic is perfectly printed with replica garage flyer inserts that accompany the forty photographs. All finished with texts from Mike Skinner from 'The Streets', and photographer Jason Evans. It's a cult classic.
