From the 1974 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, “Londoners at Home” was photographed from 1971-74, when the artist lived and worked in London. London, but maybe not as we know it now. London in the 1970s was a different place; it was an industrial hub that had shot to life during the swinging 60s and was becoming an increasingly diverse and popular place to live. "I was (and continue to be), driven by my desire to photograph the poignancy of ordinary people in their daily lives, not posing for the camera. The closer we look, the more important each individual becomes."
