Only a small edition of Portraits in Life and Death was ever published in 1976, and Hujar himself was notorious for his meticulous attention to detail and was never really satisfied with the printing or its quality. Nevertheless, one of the most important pieces of work was created and one of the most treasured in the Record 28 archive. Hujar’s intimate photographs of queer culture in New York from the late 1960s until the early 1980s were captured and locked in a time post-stonewall but pre-AIDS epidemic. The likes of Divine, John Waters, Susan Sontag, and more are captured perfectly in this project.
Hujar was at the forefront of the group of artists, musicians, writers, and performers in downtown New York in the 1970s and early 80s. He himself succumbed to AIDS in 1987, leaving behind a complex and profound body of work that has become posthumously celebrated. With the recent release of the brilliant 'Peter Hujar's Day'. we grew even more with appreciation and intrigue at an incredible artist gone too soon.
