Published alongside the exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. The seminal 2000 book Portraits explores the work of Artist Rineke Dijkstra. Dijkstra appropriated the formal qualities of the studio portrait from the early part of this century, taking the convention of the full-length, frontal and centrally composed portrait to its logical limits, enabling her to penetrate to the core of her subjects. Dijkstra doesn't look for the polished or the posed. Instead, she finds her subjects in states of transition, physical, emotional, and developmental. This collection solidified her status as one of the most significant photographers of the late 20th century, offering a look at humanity that is at once uncomfortable and deeply moving.
