Eric Kroll's first book Sex Objects, was published in 1977 with a $5000 grant from the New York State Council of the Arts. Sex Objects takes its lens to a now-familiar project matter. Photographs, stories, and interviews with sex workers from New York, Denver, Baltimore, Chicago, and Hollywood. It's a timeless collection of work and completely genre-defining and important. The following year, the Council on the Arts’ budget was cut by $4 million, a decision based on several factors, including the ‘Kroll incident,’ which was considered pornography by NY State Senator John J. Marchi and others and something the state should not fund. What a story, what a book.
