These incredible portraits of Taliban soldiers were collected by Thomas Dworzak during his coverage of the fall of the Taliban regime in 2002. Photography had been banned under the taliban's strict version of Islam for many years. In 2001, a small row of photography studios reopened, primarily to meet the demand for identification or passport photography. With this slight rule change came an opportunity for some soldiers. They would ask for a more flattering and softer portrait taken in the back rooms of the studios, set up to be as decorative as possible. Sometimes for family members or for themselves, sometimes holding flowers or mimicking silent movie stars. For a country that had been at almost constant war for 30 years, these soft moments give us insight into the human condition, regardless of views or religion.  Most of these soldiers had to flee the advancing opposition and the United States’ bombing, and are probably not alive.
