Published for the 1995 Venice Biennale, Andere Porträts + 3D documents a pivotal moment in Thomas Ruff’s exploration of digital manipulation and the nature of photographic reality.
Moving away from his famous deadpan, passport-style Porträts, Ruff used a 1970s Minolta montage synthesiser, traditionally used by German police to generate composite suspect sketches, to layer faces of different individuals onto one another. The resulting composite portraits create uncanny, eerily believable individuals who do not actually exist. The volume also features his early 3D stereoscopic experiments, pushing the boundaries of spatial perception in two-dimensional photography.
